At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
