New research suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
