2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the necessity for a distinct direction.

The president stated that the team is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our players.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Brinkman presently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."
