Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, following the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
